Kaliganj Upazila (LALMONIRHAT district) with an area of 236.96 sq km, is bounded by HATIBANDHA upazila and West Bengal of India on the north, GANGACHARA and KISHOREGANJ (Lalmonirhat) upazilas on the south, ADITMARI upazila on the east and JALDHAKA upazila on the west. Main rivers are TISTA and Trimohani; depressions: 18, most noted of which are Gegra Beel and Kamlar Beel. Kaliganj (Town) consists of three mouzas. The area of the town is 10.22 sq km. It has a population of 14163; male 51.73%, female 48.27%. The population density is 1385 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 30.03%.

Administration

Kaliganj thana was established in 1913 and was turned into an upazila in 1982. The upazila consists of 8 union parishads, 164 mouzas and 88 villages.

Archaeological relics and monuments

Rajbari of Maharaja Mohimaranjan, Tusharbhandar Rajbari, Sambhusagar, the house and statue of Daribabu.

Historical events

Main historical events of the upazila include invasion of Kuchbihar by the Mughal in 1687; peasant rebellion led by Nuraldin, Fakir-Sannyasi rebellion and the peasant movement in the 1940. During the WAR OF LIBERATION the main mass killing site of Lalmonirhat district was at Votemari of this upazila where hundreds of Bangalis were killed by the Pak army.

Mass killing site: in front of the house of Freedom fighter Sirajul Haque (to the east of Votemari Railway Station); mass grave: at a place adjacent to the KUP Degree College; memorial monument "Chiranjibi (eternal) Kaliganj" at the compound of KUP High School.

198108; male 51.48%, female 48.52%; Muslim 78.43%, Hindu 21.17%; Christian 0.12%, Buddhist 0.04% and others 0.24%.

Educational institutions: college 6, government high school 2, non-government high school 17, government primary school 58, non-government primary school 72, madrasa 7, vocational high school 1, computer training centre 1. Noted institutions: Madanpur Bairati Primary School (1865), Kakina Mahima Ranjan Memorial Bilateral High School (1901).

Paddy, wheat, tobacco, jute, potato, brinjal and ginger. Extinct or nearly extinct crops: Linseed, aus paddy, barley, dal (pulse) and bazra.

Mango, jackfruit, banana, litchi, papaya and watermelon.
